Occupational Therapy session combines festive preparation with essential life skills development
On Saturday 8th November, Down Right Brilliant's senior group enjoyed a productive morning out, joining Occupational Therapy NI for a community shopping trip that combined Christmas preparation with valuable skills development.
Learning Through Real-World Experience
The shopping expedition was carefully designed to build practical independence skills in a supportive, real-world setting. Our young people navigated the store with growing confidence, using tools and strategies that promote independent living.
Skills in Action
Throughout the morning, participants practiced essential life skills including:
Navigation and Planning
Using picture lists to remember shopping items
Following overhead store signs to locate the correct aisles
Regularly checking lists to ensure nothing was forgotten
Money Management
Managing the payment process independently
Requesting and checking receipts
Verifying change after purchases
Social Confidence
Engaging in conversation with peers
Interacting with other shoppers
Communicating with store staff
Building Confidence Through Community Engagement
These community outings are an integral part of our occupational therapy program. They provide opportunities for our members to practice skills in real-world environments, building the confidence and independence needed for everyday life.
The relaxed, supportive atmosphere allowed everyone to take their time, ask questions, and support each other—creating a positive learning experience that felt more like a fun outing than formal training.
Celebrating Success
To celebrate a successful shopping trip, the group finished the morning with well-deserved hot chocolate and treats—a lovely way to reflect on their achievements and enjoy each other's company.
The Bigger Picture
Activities like this shopping trip demonstrate Down Right Brilliant's holistic approach to supporting our members. Beyond our regular therapy sessions, we create opportunities for young people to develop practical skills, build confidence, and engage meaningfully with their community.
These experiences prepare our members for greater independence while reinforcing that they are valued, capable members of their community.
Our Occupational Therapy classes are held on weekly on Saturday morning, focusing on improving independence and motor skills through engaging, practical activities. To learn more about our services, visit our Support page.
